After issuing a statement about the existence of horrendous extraterrestrials, astrophysicist Stephen Hawking re-create the controversy.

No longer care about being branded ‘mad scientist’, Hawking again issued a second theory which is also surprising.

Preparing for his appearance in a documentary on the Discovery, Stephen Hawking’s Universe, which aired next week, May 9, 2010, he confessed to believe humans can explore the time.

Humans, according to Hawking, can crawl up to millions of years into the future to fill out and start again the civilization of Planet Earth that has been destroyed.

Someday, Hawking said, there will be exploration of outer space plane that could fly faster than the speed of light. One day of exploration in space equal to one year on Earth.

May 5 (Bloomberg) — Indonesia’s Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, who has been a candidate to head her nation’s central bank, was selected to be a top adviser to World Bank President Robert Zoellick.

Sri Mulyani will start June 1 as one of the Washington- based bank’s three managing directors, the highest rank under Zoellick. She “brings a unique set of skills and experience to the World Bank Group, from the vantage point of an advancing middle-income country that still faces significant challenges of poverty,” Zoellick said in an e-mailed statement.

The selection highlights the rising global role of Indonesia, the fourth most-populous nation and a member of the Group of 20 emerging and developed countries. It may also affect Indonesia’s economic leadership, as Sri Mulyani was one of two candidates proposed last June to head Bank Indonesia, an appointment stymied by a parliamentary probe led by factions within the governing coalition and members of the opposition.

“The appointment is like a win-win solution,” said Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, an economist at Danareksa Research Institute in Jakarta. The new job can help Sri Mulyani save “face here in Indonesia. She has been facing a lot of political pressure,” he said.

Stocks fell after the announcement left it unclear who will succeed Sri Mulyani as finance minister. The Jakarta Composite Index fell 1.4 percent to 2,918.57 as of 9:50 a.m. local time, compared with a 1 percent decline for the regional MSCI Asia Pacific index.

Regional Responsibilities

Sri Mulyani, 47, will replace Juan Jose Daboub, who will complete his four-year term June 30, overseeing 74 nations in Latin America, the Caribbean, East Asia and the Pacific, the Middle East and North Africa, the bank said. Daboub is a former El Salvador finance minister.

The last managing director that Zoellick appointed was Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a former Nigerian finance and foreign minister, in October 2007. The third managing director, Graeme Wheeler, said in January that he will leave the institution by the end of next month. Wheeler worked at the New Zealand Treasury before joining the Washington-based development bank.

“It is a great honor for me and also for my country to have this opportunity to contribute to the very important mission of the bank in changing the world,” Sri Mulyani said in the statement.

Sri Mulyani and Vice President Boediono, who was the last central bank governor, have been the target of an opposition campaign accusing them of abusing their authority during the 6.7 trillion-rupiah ($740 million) bailout of PT Bank Century in 2008, during the global financial crisis.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s administration has been credited with helping bring political stability to Indonesia, which has seen economic growth accelerate and inflation moderate in recent years.

The ASEAN region is located at the intersection of three major tectonic plates namely Eurasian, Indo-Australian and the Pacific plates, and one minor plate, Philippine plate. This condition generates thousands of earthquake every year most of which are potentially destructive. In recent years, several big earthquakes occurred in some parts of
ASEAN countries which caused considerable damage to
buildings and other structures, landslides in mountainous regions, ground subsidence and ground rupture. These big earthquakes have also caused major fatalities. What makes an earthquake more devastating is the fact that it may generate tsunami with up to 10 meter high waves which add to the extent of the damage, especially in areas along the coast.

To monitor earthquake activities, and to help mitigate the effects of earthquake disasters, most countries in ASEAN have established their National Seismological Centres (NSCs). While NSCs in some countries are quite modern, others are still in the process of upgrading. Ideally each of the upgraded NSC should have a real time monitoring system and other facilities for rapid dissemination of earthquake information.

ASEAN member countries have been striving to improve the capabilities of NSCs in their respective countries to enable NSCs to conduct various activities and research programme addressing earthquake prediction and monitoring, proper land use planning, seismic hazard and risk assessment with different levels of techniques and degrees of depth. These are all aimed at mitigating the risks of earthquakes to mankind. These efforts are, however, hampered by common problems relating to trained personnel and adequate seismic facilities. The Resident Evil games always had a bit of light gun gaming in their mechanics. To shoot at a monster that you have to stop, pull out your gun and aim. You can’t move while firing or aiming. The purpose of this is to add an extra layer of tension to the game’s scarce resources and claustrophobic spaces: the distance between you and the zombie itself is a finite resource. They’ve stuck to this theme throughout the series, including part 4 when it was interesting and part 5 when it started getting tedious. Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles is an exercise in removing all the walking around and exploring in these games while leaving everything else. Without trying to sound like I’m making an indictment of the series, you’d be surprised at how little this affects your enjoyment of the game.(source:popmatters.com)

DARPA: The A160 Hummingbird

ON 6 December 1957 a hollow aluminium sphere the size of a small melon burst from a blazing fireball, rose a mere metre or so above Florida before landing with a thump. The US was in trouble. A month earlier, the Soviet Union had sent a 500-kilogram capsule bearing a dog called Laika into space. But here was the US unable to even notch up its first foray into orbit.

President Dwight Eisenhower responded by creating a new research agency tasked with ensuring such “technological surprises” like Sputnik would never be sprung on the US again. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), conceived in February 1958 not only still exists, it has consistently made the US military the most advanced on Earth and unleashed life-changing technologies such as the internet, GPS and the computer mouse along the way.

Under the control of the Pentagon, DARPA has always maintained a low profile, but now journalist Michael Belfiore has written the first book about the agency. He spent time with the engineers charged with realising some very far-fetched ideas, which, if past performance is anything to go by, may also create society-changing spin-offs. He also gained unprecedented access to the agency’s director, Tony Tether (now retired).

The current projects that Belfiore visits have typically ambitious goals - ones which dedicated New Scientist readers will be familiar with. He talks with two groups working to make prosthetic arms as nimble and light as the real thing, watches driverless cars work their way through real traffic in a bid to win a $2-million prize, and meets the creators of a portable robotic emergency roomintended to keep injured soldiers alive long enough to reach hospital. He also learns about efforts to build scramjets able to race around the world in just a few hours.

Remarkably, DARPA doesn’t own any of these labs. Its minimally bureaucratic three-level chain of command has gone essentially unchanged over the years. It works like this: the agency’s director recruits a small staff of specialist programme managers to dream up far-fetched future technologies; the programme managers invite applications from engineers; the winning contractors frantically work to get results in the tight requisite time-frame of three to five years.

According to Tether, the most crucial step is the first. “The best DARPA programme managers, I swear, are science fiction writers.”

Some of them are certainly fans of science fiction. A programme manager working on the robotic trauma-theatre tells Belfiore he got ideas for projects from sci-fi he had read in his 1950s childhood, and invited contemporary sci-fi writers to give seminars to help inspire DARPA engineers.

Striking the right balance between belief in the power of technology and credulity, though, is not easy. “You’ve got to fail some fraction of the time or you’re not pushing the limits far enough,” says Tether.

DARPA has certainly done its share of failing. Belfiore makes no mention that it was on Tether’s watch in 2003 that DARPA started spending money on the junk-science notion of nuke-like “hafnium bombs” that would supposedly sidestep nuclear non-proliferation restrictions, although he does refer to the “considerable amounts” spent on psychic spying in the 1970s.

I would have liked more about how DARPA’s ideas people handle the ever-present risk of stepping over the edge of what’s possible. Unfortunately, the limited access granted to Belfiore wasn’t enough to find that out, just as he wasn’t told anything about the 50 per cent of DARPA projects that are classified. Belfiore does a good job of exploring the sunny side of the moon that is DARPA, but we still don’t know what’s lurking on the dark side.(source:newscientist.com)

1000 mph Car

Time = 0 seconds

Strapped into a custom built seat, Andy Green prepares for the ride of his life. The pancake-flat desert stretches out for miles ahead. The computer indicates all systems are normal. He eases off the brakes and puts his foot down on the throttle. The jet engine roars into life. In precisely 42.5 seconds he’ll be travelling 1000 mph. In a car.

“It’s almost impossible to tell the difference between going supersonic in a car and in an aircraft,” says Green. He is the only person on Earth who can say that from personal experience. Green was a fighter pilot for the UK Royal Air Force for 20 years, and he is also the fastest man on wheels. In 1997, driving a vehicle called ThrustSSC, he set the world land speed record of 763 miles per hour, becoming the first and only person to break the sound barrier in a car (761 mph under standard conditions). Now, together with the Bloodhound SSC design team, he’s attempting to do it all over again, and then some.

This time there’s competition. A three-way race is developing, with two other teams, one from North America and the other from Australia, vying to wrest the record from the Brits. The first step will be to break the existing record and get past 800 mph. If that succeeds, the next stage is to attempt 1000 mph (1609 kilometres per hour). “That’s what we’re designing the car for,” says Ron Ayers, chief aeronautic engineer on the Bloodhound project.

All three competing vehicles have wheels, brakes and a steering wheel, but that’s pretty much where the similarity with conventional cars ends. Getting up to the speed of sound and beyond poses challenges that a normal car will never encounter, requiring some radical design and engineering.

For example, the wheels of a 1000 mph car will need to rotate at over 10,000 revolutions per minute, many times faster than on an ordinary car. This rate of spin entails an acceleration of almost 50,000 g at the rim, generating forces that would easily tear conventional wheels apart. Instead, this car will need wheels of solid titanium, or more likely carbon-reinforced aluminium. What’s more, as the vehicle approaches the speed of sound, it produces a frontal shock wave which liquefies the earth ahead, so the wheels end up carving through ground, rather than simply rolling over it. On top of all that, beyond 250 mph, airflow starts to become a more important consideration in controlling the vehicle than traction on the ground. At this speed, the wheels begin to behave like rudders or aerofoils, and driving the car becomes more like controlling a speedboat or flying an aircraft. “Our biggest single concern is to make sure the vehicle stays on the ground,” says Green.

Creating a “car” that takes account of all these factors means exploring unchartered territory in aerodynamics and vehicle mechanics. “No one has ever designed a car to go this fast before,” says Green, “so we’ve got to develop and test, develop and test… it’s an ongoing research project.”

Time = 10 seconds

Green hits 79 mph. At this stage he would be eating the dust of an average sports car, but Bloodhound is an automotive wolf in sheep’s clothing. Green holds steady, and 5 seconds later unleashes the first of his secret weapons: an afterburner which dumps extra fuel into the jet engine, stoking it up to full power.

Bloodhound SSC will use a retired Eurofighter jet engine to provide the first-stage thrust for the car. In that respect it resembles ThrustSSC, which was powered entirely by two jet engines. But according to Ayers, that set-up won’t be good enough to reach 1000 mph. “The large front inlets [for the jet engines to take in air] on ThrustSSC produced huge shock waves at supersonic speed,” he says. “This means we couldn’t get any more than a 5 per cent increase in speed using that design.”

The joint US-Canadian team, North American Eagle, begs to differ. They are going entirely with jets. Instead of designing a car from scratch, they have taken the fuselage of a scrapped F-104 Starfighter aircraft, added the engine from an F-4 Phantom supersonic fighter-bomber bought from a surplus seller, and bolted on some wheels. “We know the aircraft can do around 1500 mph, so if we can do just half of that on land we’re already pretty close to the record,” says Ed Shadle, the car’s driver and co-owner.

Unlike their competitors, North American Eagle is already built and rolling. Shadle has done 27 runs so far, pushing the car to 400 mph to test the parachute systems and brakes, and to collect data to model what will happen at higher speeds. He is now refining the wheels and aerodynamics. “We’re hoping to go after the record on the Fourth of July 2010,” he says.

As yet he doesn’t know where that attempt will be made, because his decision to go with jets alone has presented him with a very difficult problem: the sheer length of track he will need to accelerate to 1000 mph and then decelerate to a stop.
